A Tale of Two Agnostics

I’m agnostic. I’ve heard that quite often. On the face of it, it sounds reasonable. And, in certain circumstances it is reasonable. But let me state clearly, not all agnostics are created equal.

One agnostic, we’ll call them True Agnostics, are people who have spent significant time researching, contemplating, getting educated in all the available data, philosophies end evidence and THEN determined that they’re agnostic. In other words, after adequate consideration, it is their opinion, that the matter is inconclusive. This agnostic is acceptable.

However, the vast majority of “agnostics” I’ve met are of the “other” type of agnostic. We’ll call them Pretend Agnostics. These people have put a sum total of 4 hours per year of their lives considering this incredibly complex question. More ridiculous, almost always, there was just that, contemplation. No research. No study. No reading from any experts. Just thinking whether they think there is a God or not, based on nothing but their “feelings”. In other words, an entirely uneducated opinion. These people have put more hard research in their life over which car to purchase, which accountant they should use, or, in some cases, which marinade goes best with their barbeque wings. And yet, they declare themselves, with great authority, to be agnostic. This is unacceptable. With all due respect, that doesn’t make a person agnostic. That makes a person indifferent.

So, which are you? Are you agnostic? If so, are you a True Agnostic or just lazy?
